Thanksgiving is approaching and that means that the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) will be trying once again to con well-intentioned parishioners out of their hard earned money.

The radical ACORN-like CCHD, whose lineage can be traced back to Saul Alinsky, collects money ostensibly for the poor. The problem is that most if not all of the money never actually makes it to the poor. It finds it way to radical left-wing groups that promote values and ideas that Americans overwhelmingly reject.

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), the anti-poverty program run by the USCCB, came under fire this past year for funding groups who were explicitly supporting abortion, contraception, and same-sex marriage.

After its internal investigation, the CCHD claimed there were problems with only five groups out of the 51 listed as problematic by the Reform CCHD Now coalition. These five groups were subsequently defunded. (The approximate total number of CCHD grants in a year is 250.)

However, new evidence has emerged that adds 16 new groups to the 51 originally listed as problematic by the Reform CCHD Now Coalition. The 2010 CCHD list of grantees has yet to be released, so we have to wait to learn how many of the problematic groups were funded once again. (The troublesome fact that the announcement of the 2010 grantee list has been delayed a month later than usual is an issue we will return to later.)

Here’s the story…

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 12, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A new “Stations of the Cross” devotional from the United States Conference for Catholic Bishops’ Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) profiles five CCHD grantees who are involved in the promotion of abortion or homosexuality, reports the Reform CCHD Now Coalition.

The CCHD Stations highlight one grantee per station. Each station includes a prayer asking that we be “inspired,” “challenge[d],” or “move[d]” by the witness of the highlighted grantee.

Reform CCHD Now has found, however, that five of the profiled groups are engaged in advocacy for or have supported activities that violate Catholic teachings:

The Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition – for making statements in support of abortion and for promoting a pro-abortion group.

The United Workers’ Association – for joining the Equality Maryland coalition in support of same-sex “marriage”, and for remaining on the Health Care for America Now coalition, which is fighting to include abortion funding in health care reform legislation.

Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement – for participating in a forum that promotes homosexual activism.

People Organized for Westside Renewal – for joining three coalitions that actively promote abortion and same-sex “marriage.”

New Mexico Acequia Association – for espousing theological views contrary to Catholic teaching and professing full support for a pro-abortion organization.

Bishop Lawrence Brandt
The Catholic Diocese of Greensburg will no longer participate in the U.S. bishops’ anti-poverty program, which some conservative activists say has funded abortion-rights and gay-rights supporters.

Bishop Lawrence Brandt said he intends to create a Diocesan Poverty Relief Fund to receive the money that formerly went to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

The Greensburg diocese sent nearly $22,000 to the campaign last year.

“This change allows our diocese to know exactly how the poverty relief funds are spent. It also assures the parishioners who make generous contributions to the diocese that they are helping their neighbors right here in southwestern Pennsylvania,” he said at a Thursday night benefit dinner for Catholic Charities of Greensburg.

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 27, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Two more U.S. bishops have discontinued their diocesan collection for the national fund of the U.S. Bishops’ domestic anti-poverty arm, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), LifeSiteNews (LSN) has learned.

Bishop Joseph Adamec of Altoona-Johnstown decided to discontinue the CCHD collection in the fall of 2009, said Tony DeGol, the diocese’s secretary for communications.

“The bishop felt that we needed to do an annual special collection for Catholic Charities, so he decided to replace the Catholic Campaign for Human Development with the collection for Catholic Charities, that will benefit our diocese,” Degol told LSN. The diocese’s Catholic Charities was “hit hard” with increased demand starting in the summer, Degol said, because other organizations had to reduce their services due to a loss in state funding.

CCHD, long criticized for its funding practices, has come under intense pressure since last August with a number of reports revealing that the organization has funded numerous groups advocating abortion, same-sex “marriage,” contraception, and other questionable activities.

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — After a months-long dustup involving Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) grants to pro-abortion organizations, a pro-life group is urging the nations Catholic bishops to consider putting together a national day in January to take a collection at churches for pro-life activities.

Several pro-life groups in a coalition have been monitoring CCHD grants and have caused some organizations to be de-funded as a result of their exposing their pro-abortion positions.

Now, Catholic Advocate is calling on the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) to launch a National Collection for Life on the weekend prior to the national March for Life.
